Taxidermy Gallery tour

 Today we took a tour of an AMAZING gallery to learn more about animals and sustainable wildlife practices.

Renowned taxidermist and certified Hunters class trainer Jim August hosted our group that made coonskin caps.

He covered proven practices that preserve and maintain wildlife levels worldwide.  The group learned about antlers vs horns, the grand slam turkeys & bighorn sheep, and other facts.  He explained we have larger numbers in N America now than when the pilgrims began towns on the East coast of the USA.

On display are dozens of beautiful animals from N America and Africa.

Our host patiently listened and answered questions.  Overall it was an incredible opportunity.

2021 NAACS leather bag class

 Welcome to NAACS 2021!  Since this annual event was not held in person, class kits were prepared in advance and mailed to participants.

Three hands on classes were presented - participants made an item;  Obsidian knife, wooden whistles & leather bags.  Over 65 wooden whistles & leather bags were made.

Today we will make a leather bag with fur decoration (sheepskin, bighorn sheep, beaver, mountain goat or black bear).

Please watch this video as a reference.  (80% of viewers found the video helpful.)

Here is a picture of one of the bags created (cow leather with wooden button & beaver fur)

Some of the feedback received include;

  • Thanks for the kit, this will fit my magnifying lens just right. So I have a great use for the bag.
  • Good quality leather
  • Also thank you, this will be a great kit for small camping gear like my knives
